Dental Implants

The modern solution for replacing missing teeth are Implants. Firmly fixed and integrated into healthy gum and bone, they give a completely natural look, feel and function, just like your own teeth - you can smile, speak and eat with complete confidence.  Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence. Dental implants are a permanent and fixed solution to missing teeth and are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacing teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. A person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved.  Once you learn about dental implants, it can provide you with opportunities to renewed self-confidence and peace of mind as well as removing any embarrassing moments. We understand how tooth loss can affect self- confidence, ability to eat and may discourage you from smiling. You are not alone. Here at Escentics we help people with these problems every day.  Our Implantologist Dr Daljit Sohal is able to discuss the best options available to you. Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed into the area where teeth are missing. They act as tooth root substitutes. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Dental implants are stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth. Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. This is a much-improved, modern alternative to bridges or dentures as, implants replace the root of missing teeth. Integrated into the bone of the jaw, they permanently anchor one or more crowns to give a completely natural feel, function and appearance.

Why choose Dental Implants?

Until recent years, the only option for missing teeth was dentures or a bridge. The problem with a bridge is that they have an average life of 10 years and when the supporting teeth fail this can lead to further extractions and larger spaces. Bridges are also a destructive way to replace a missing space especially when healthy teeth either side must be filed to act as supports. Dentures can feel loose and cause pain, harbour bacteria and affect speech and taste. Dentures also need to be removed every night. Implants, on the other hand don’t affect adjacent teeth and are firmly fixed and integrated into your body’s own tissues, just like the teeth they are replacing. Once a tooth is lost, the soft tissue (gums) begins to flatten as bone around it begins to disappear leaving ‘black triangles’. So the earlier an implant is placed the more bone can be saved, which is crucial in achieving the best possible outcome. Dental implants can last over 30 years and have a very high success rate and like your natural teeth they’ll last as long as they are well looked after and excellent oral hygiene is maintained.

Does the treatment hurt?

Placing an implant involves a small operation which in many cases is carried out under a local anaesthetic or can be carried out under Sedation. After placement the discomfort is minor and in most cases over-the-counter painkillers are all you’ll need. Bruising and swellings may occur.

Is it expensive?

Each individual case varies; therefore we are unable to set a standard fee although your dentist can give you an idea of costs. Once you have had you consultation we will give you a written quotation. The costs are generally comparable or cheaper to crown and bridge restorations considering their longevity. Implants will improve your quality of life and are the best option to replace missing teeth.

Advanced Minimally Invasive Implant Surgery

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, we are able to place single stage implants or even immediate implants. In many cases the implants can be placed at the same time as a tooth is removed – further minimizing the number of surgical procedures. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them. This procedure is called “immediate loading.”  Once the implants are beneath the surface of the gums they begin bonding with the jawbone. After the implant has bonded to the jaw, an abutment and final crown is placed on the implant by your dentist.A temporary tooth or denture can be made that appears and functions normally so you will not need be without a tooth. Most patients will experience minimal to no disruption in their daily life and are smiling with confidence as they leave the office.

What Options Are Available?

The number of implants you may need varies depending upon the condition of your mouth and which type of treatment is recommended. We will discuss all available treatment options and will help you decide your best course of care. Below please find a basic explanation of treatment options available at our office.

  • A single crown is used to replace one missing tooth – each prosthetic tooth attaches to its own implant.
  • A fixed bridge can replace many teeth and may require fewer implants.
  • A complete fixed bridge replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw.
  • An over denture attaches securely attaches to implants and is removable for proper cleaning.
  • All-on-4™ is an option that allows us to perform a complete rehabilitation of the upper or lower jaw with only four implants. This minimally invasive procedure allows the patient to leave the office with their new teeth the same day.

Why Select Dental Implants Over More Traditional Types Of Restorations?

There are several reasons: Why ruin the structure of adjacent healthy teeth to bridge a space? In addition, removing a denture or a “partial” at night may be inconvenient, not to mention that dentures that slip can be uncomfortable and rather embarrassing. Most patients find proper hygiene very difficult with bridges and dentures. Since bridges and dentures do not stimulate the jawbone, it melts away over time leading to changes in your natural facial contours. Dental implants allow you to maintain your existing bone and smile with confidence.  Patients have two anaesthesia options for their procedure:Local anaesthesia or IV sedation. If you are considering implants your medical and dental history will be reviewed.  If your mouth is presently not ideal for implants, we can create a custom treatment solution for your situation.  Once the implants are in place and with proper care they will serve you well for many years.  This means taking the time for good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing)and keeping regular appointments with your dentist.
